In a world full of stress and pressure from seeking to be the top of the competitions. Should corporately integrate soft life workplace. Soft life at the workplace is not taking employees to a luxurious vacation or restaurant or sharing money with everyone. It is how we solve the issue of stress and priorities.

With over 15 years of my life managing businesses and industries based in the United States and Africa, I came to understand the corporate world has changed and the pressure to do the best has broken the workflow today (since after the covid).

What is a soft life first? Soft life is the ability of managing stress with life ongoing experiences. How can we corporate leaders (managers, leads, and executives) create a life experience for our teams to remain mentally and prioritizing.

At one of the biggest retail stores in the USA, where I am given the manager post to lead a team of 20, everyone on the team finds it worth working with me over other managers. Why? I came to realize other managers use the formula of “Management” as managing people rather toward tasks.

As we build the mindset to manage people, we become or create a micro-manage structure that becomes pressuring for others.

Over 9-10 years of retail and corporate leadership experience. Retail is one of the most stressful business types in the world where products must be sold for new inputs.

My formula of leadership and management comes as a result I quit early in my career due to mental stress. My life was being left out without having time to balance my eating, sleeping and personal development. I was putting more into completing projects neglecting other aspects of my life that make up both professional and social lives.

Formula to soft life at workplaces:

Soft life at workplace = simplicity + collaboration + curiosity

Simplicity - making life tasks easy and understandable that every level of understanding can catch. I had a manager who expected me to know everything in the company without better explaining the basic process to the advanced aspect. It was a nightmare.

How are we studying our team's accuracy of learning? Are they finding it difficult, so more questions are being asked? If simplicity is applied in our instructions, our team should be able to reduce the pressure from our head because they understand what is to be done.

Collaboration - making the workplace more collaborative accomplishment as to individuality accomplishment. When I read many job descriptions, they will say “Are you able to complete a task without any help needed”

No matter the task, we must integrate collaboration to bring effectiveness and reliability without burning out one individual. I use the method of collaboration by allowing every member of my team to work towards sharing their point of the project completion. With that, everyone learns and can get the project done before the due time without anyone burning out.

As we become more tired of burning out without achieving anything for ourselves, we make decisions to stop being productive since our mental balance is compromised. I am known to be the best sales manager and most wanted to work with manager my team says “The best manager in the whole world”

Curiosity - I put my life into everyone’s shoes. There is no employee who crosses that door to work without me asking about their ongoing life experiences (both personal and public).

I ask:

  • How are you doing
    today?

  • Any fun before coming to work?
  • How is the family?
  • What is your passion and what makes you interested in this passion?
  • Are you happy with things around you and what do you intend to change to make the world a better place?

These few questions open the door to me learning more about my team. I know every member of my team's personal lives. Because I put curiosity at the center of managing their task. I do not call them employees but “team” by including myself as a member of the team.

As we become more curious, we give those around us the chance to freely share their experiences and open new ways to solve complex issues. With collaboration, we create an informative and developmental space for individuals interests to shine. And bring out the best for innovation.
